Super El Niño Raises Global Crop Risk as Drought Threat Spreads
A developing El Niño in the Pacific is forecast to become the strongest in more than a century, creating a broad new source of weather risk for agricultural markets heading into 2027.
The UK Met Office expects the event to peak at more than 3C above normal Pacific sea temperatures, a level described as unprecedented in modern climate records.
The effects are expected to extend far beyond the Pacific, with severe drought risks across several major agricultural regions.
South America and the west Pacific face severe drought risk
The Met Office expects particularly strong impacts across the tropics.
Forecasts point to severe droughts in parts of South America and the west Pacific, while southern Africa and northeast Australia also face a heightened risk of dry conditions.
These regions are important producers of grains, oilseeds, sugar, livestock and other agricultural commodities.
