Reading the Black Sea–Turkey freight series

Black Sea to Turkey is the shortest deep-sea grain corridor on the board: Novorossiysk to Marmara or Mersin is a matter of days, and cargoes move on Handysize and smaller vessels. Turkey is the largest single buyer of Russian wheat, so this rate is embedded in a large share of CIF Turkey offers.

The series started at 14 USD/MT on 31 January — the lowest freight print on the board — and finished at 57. The high of 57 was first reached on 22 August, in a single week that added 23 USD/MT; the following scan held that level. The archive records the level, not the cause.

At 14 dollars, freight was about 6% of the FOB wheat price; at 57 it was over a quarter. That is why a CIF Mersin quote and a FOB Novorossiysk quote can move in different directions in the same week.
