Reading the Black Sea–Egypt Panamax freight series

Egypt is the world's largest wheat importer, and the Panamax rate to Alexandria or Damietta is the freight leg behind most CIF Egypt tenders. This series is the 40,000–50,000 MT stem; the 30,000 MT stem is tracked separately.

The rate moved from 19 to 58 USD/MT over the archive. It was at its lowest, 18, on 30 May, and reached its high of 58 on 22 August with a 13-dollar week. The final print held the high.

The Panamax rate ran 1–2 dollars under the 30,000 MT rate through winter and spring — the usual economy of scale — sat at parity through the summer, and was 2 under at the end; the gap did not widen when the level tripled.
