Reading the US Gulf SRW wheat series
Soft Red Winter wheat is the low-protein US class used for biscuits, crackers and cake flour, shipped from the Gulf of Mexico. It is not a substitute for 12.5% bread wheat, but it is the wheat class most visible in futures markets and therefore a common yardstick in price discussions.
The archive runs from 238 to 308.5 USD/MT — a rise of 70.5 USD/MT, about 30%. The low was 235 on 7 February, the high the last print on 29 August, and the largest weekly move +16.5 on 11 July. It never traded below the Russian 12.5% line during the period and ended 91 dollars above it.
Read it as a sentiment reference rather than a competing offer: Gulf-to-Mediterranean freight and the protein difference both work against SRW in the destinations served from the Black Sea.
