Reading the US Gulf HRW wheat series

Hard Red Winter wheat at 11% protein is the US bread-wheat class and the closest American analogue to Black Sea milling wheat. It is the origin that competes with Russian wheat in tenders open to all origins, so its spread to the Russian 12.5% line is the one to watch.

Thirty scans are archived. The mid went from 260 to 348 USD/MT, the largest absolute gain on the wheat board (+88 USD/MT, about 34%). The low was 250.5 on 7 February and the high the final print. The largest weekly step came early — +23 on 7 March — before a sustained climb through July and August.

In late January HRW carried a 27.5-dollar premium over Russian 12.5%; by 29 August the premium was 130.5 dollars. A 12.5% Black Sea cargo therefore offers more protein at a lower FOB than 11% HRW at the end of this archive — freight to destination decides the landed comparison.
