Reading the Black Sea–East Spain freight series

East Spain — Tarragona, Valencia, Cartagena — is the entry point for one of the EU's largest feed industries, which imports corn, feed wheat and barley in Panamax lots. The route runs the length of the Mediterranean without a canal transit.

The rate moved from 23 to 31 USD/MT over the archive: low 22 on 9 May, high 31 on 22 August, largest weekly step +5 on 8 August. It is the smallest move of any corridor on the board that was actually repriced (the South Africa line did not change at all).

Because this corridor moved so little while the Turkey and North Africa rates tripled, the relative attractiveness of Black Sea grain into Spain versus into closer destinations changed materially over the summer.
