Reading the US PNW corn series
US No. 3 yellow corn from the Pacific Northwest (Portland/Columbia River) serves Japan, Korea, Taiwan and other Asian buyers. The 3YC grade allows slightly more damage and foreign material than the 2YC quoted at NOLA, but the PNW price is normally higher because of rail freight from the Corn Belt.
The mid rose from 225 to 262.5 USD/MT (+37.5, about 17%). The low was 217.5 on 21 February, the high the final print on 29 August, and the largest weekly move +12.5 on 22 August.
The PNW premium over NOLA was 10 dollars in late January and 15 dollars at the end of August. On this board it is the reference for the Asian destinations that also appear in the freight table — China, Indonesia and Bangladesh.
