Reading the corn gluten feed series

Corn gluten feed is the mid-protein co-product of corn wet milling — about 21% protein with high fibre — used mainly in cattle rations. It competes with DDGS, wheat bran and other fibrous by-products rather than with soybean meal.

Thirty scans are archived. This is the most volatile series on the board relative to its level: from a high of 242.5 on the first print it fell to 175 USD/MT on 4 July, a drop of more than a quarter, then recovered with a +45 week on 15 August to finish at 237.5 — only 5 dollars below where it started.

The trough came three weeks after the mid-June low in US Gulf corn; the archive records the levels, not a cause, and none should be assumed. Treat the mid-year prints as a reminder that by-product prices can move independently of the parent grain.
