Reading the Australian feed barley series

Australia harvests barley in November–December and ships to Asian and Middle-East feed markets, particularly Saudi Arabia and China. It rarely meets Black Sea barley in the Mediterranean, but the two origins compete head-on in the Gulf, which makes it a useful reference next to the Saudi freight series.

The mid rose from 247.5 to 282.5 USD/MT (+35, about 14%). Unlike the other barley origins the high was not the last print: the series peaked at 287.5 on 9 May, eased into summer and recovered with a +15 step on 29 August. The low was the first print on 31 January.

In the first week both were quoted (7 February) Australian barley was 20 dollars over the Black Sea line; it closed 77.5 dollars over it. Freight differentials to Jeddah or Dammam decide whether that FOB gap survives on a landed basis.
